Escritor alemán. Estudiante de física, matemáticas y filosofía, Broch publicó su primera obra importante, Los sonámbulos (1931–32), ya cumplidos los 40 años. Se trata de una trilogía en la que narra la desintegración de la sociedad europea entre 1888 y 1918 y que ejemplifica, por el uso que hace de diversas formas narrativas para presentar una amplia gama de experiencias, lo que son sus innovadoras novelas multidimensionales. Sus otras novelas incluyen La muerte de Virgilio (1945), que describe las últimas 18 horas de la vida de Virgilio, y Die Verzauberung [El hechizo] (1953), que narra la dominación que un extranjero hitleriano ejerce sobre una aldea. También escribió ensayos, cartas y reseñas.
